Discover Local history and Pleasure Cruises at Polruan's Boatyard

With winter now in full swing, it's hard to think of those balmy summer days on the beach. However, with Easter only 8 weeks away, it won't be long before you’re donning your flip flops and shorts and soaking up the sunshine in Cornwall. Our self-catering cottages in Cornwall provide the perfect escape for families, friends and couples, and what better way to enjoy some quality time with loved ones than a boat trip?

In Polruan, the C. Toms & Son Boatyard is a prominent business in the village, and the site has been operating as a boatyard for centuries. We've found some pictures going back to 1900's of the boat-builders of Slades yard in Polruan.

While the exact dates of the site’s operations are not known, C. Toms & Son Limited was founded by Charlie Toms in 1922 when he rented a piece of land on Newquay Dock to carry our marine work and blacksmithing.

Together with his son Jack, Charlie Toms worked on repairs for ships like the Admiralty. After World War II, the company decided to expand its services to house repairs and they began building houses in Cornwall by the 1960s. One of the proudest jobs for Charlie Toms, being a local preacher, was replacing the stained-glass round window in Polruan Church.

Now a family affair, with Jack's two sons Allen and Philip joining the business, the company started building and repairing MOD and fishing motor vessels in the 1960s. Sadly, the owner Charlie died, but operations continued and it wasn't long before they purchased the Bodinnick car ferry in the 1970s. Then, in 1993 the company took over the operations of Polruan Ferry Company, which runs the passenger ferry between Polruan and Fowey.

The Boatyard continues to be family-run company today, and is run by Jack's son Allen and his family. They build and repair boats, as well as offer boat trips for private parties. Perfect for special celebrations or weddings, the boats will cruise along the river around Polruan, Fowey and Golant, allowing guests to take in the beautiful views.

If you're planning a wedding or birthday celebration in Cornwall, why not take a look at our wide range of beautiful cottages in Cornwall, and book your stay in Polruan or Fowey? We have dog-friendly properties, cottages with sea views, and large properties that cater for bigger groups.
