Riverside Family Holidays in Cornwall
“From the moment we reach the top of St Saviours Hill my heart skips a beat, as I take in the breathtaking panoramic views over the River with the beauty of both Fowey and Polruan in view. Polruan is a beautiful hidden and somewhat unknown gem of the Cornish coast, unspoilt and oozing natural beauty that Cornwall is renowned for. Having stayed on several occasions we are drawn year after year to the amazing tranquility and perfection that Polruan has to offer our family.
My Husband, sons Alex (15) & Max (8), Grace (the dog) and I each thoroughly enjoy our wonderful holiday destination of Polruan. We enjoy kayaking the safe and picturesque surroundings of the River Fowey, secret coves only accessible by kayak make adventures endless as well as making trips to ready money cove, an integral part of our holiday. Polruan’s sandy beaches offer different adventures with each high and low tide, beach combing for sea treasure at low tide (one of my favourite activities!) gives an exciting glimpse into the past with plenty of pieces of old pottery and rare early sea glass. High tide is full of excitement for the children, jumping, splashing and swimming in the secluded and sheltered harbour as well as crabbing from the pontoon and fishing from the blockhouse (my husbands favourite pastime). For me the best part of our holiday aside from seeing the children have fun is the inspiring and captivating views which are visible from nearly every part of Polruan. Sitting and watching boats of every denomination fills me with utter excitement and supplies endless inspiration for my coastal inspired art work. I spend many relaxing afternoons sat in beautiful spots around Polruan just taking in the view, drawing, painting and watching the boys play, utter perfection.
Each of the cottages in Polruan have offered us a comfortable snug haven in which to enjoy the surroundings and stunning views. We very much enjoy staying in different cottages, with each one offering a new experience and an all important new view. We very much enjoyed our stays in Tinkers Revel, Anchor Cottage, Cliff Cottage and have been fortunate enough to also visit Anchor Two, Pucks, Mayne, Sea Cell and Waterside Cottage. This year we are looking forward to May, the first of our Polruan holidays, staying in Salts and in August my entire Family will be joining us to celebrate my birthday staying in Mayne and Waterside Cottage.
A warm and friendly welcome always awaits us on our returning trips to Polruan. The Lugger Inn offers the most exquisite Cornish seafood around, an absolute must on our list to enjoy their menu at least twice during our stay (we highly recommend the scallops and the steam pot). Alongside the harbour it is perfectly located to offer a rather refreshing gin and tonic to take out onto the quay and enjoy the views or sit by the snug fire in winter. A further pub The Russell, a well stocked mini market, a fresh produce visiting van, newsagents, post office and tea shop all serve the small village and make it a self contained location. Leaving our car in the carpark and not having to leave the village is, for us a wonderful feature of this unique destination. We all enjoy the short passenger ferry direct from the quay to Fowey to visit lovely independent shops, galleries and most importantly the bakers for freshly baked pasties."
