Frequently asked questions

This is something that worries first time visitors to Polruan… If a property does not have parking- it really is not a problem as we have two car parks one of which is free plus there is also parking on the Quay. The main car park at St Saviours is £25 for a weekly ticket.
Each property states if parking is available on site, please mention if it is a larger than normal car, Polruan & Fowey are traditional villages our streets are very quaint and narrow, some were definitely not designed for the larger modern cars, difficulty may be experienced on some streets. If the property does not have parking there are two car parks where a weekly ticket costs £25.00 or there is also a free car park at the top of the village, which is still walking distance to all properties. If the hill makes you breath a bit deeply, do what the locals do, walk for a bit then turn round to look at the river’s ever changing backdrop, stop and have a chat and a rest on the hill….. there’s no rush you will get there dreckly and in no time you will find yourself at the top!
If the property does not have parking there is a free car park in Park Road. There are also two car parks run by the Council. Central car park is near the top of the hill, and Caffa Mill car park, where the Bodinnick ferry runs from. In each of these car parks a ticket can be purchased in advance from the council. To obtain a ticket call 0300 1234222 if you ask for a ‘rover ticket’ it will be valid in any council run car park in Cornwall. A ticket can also be purchased by phone from the meter if you don’t have the correct money, or by calling into The One Stop Shop which is in the library just next to Caffa Mill car park. The Harbour commission also run a car park you can call 01726 832471 where it is £28 for a weekly ticket. Taking a car through Fowey can be daunting especially in high summer when the main street is full of tanned, happy visitors. To avoid this you can park in the central car park and catch the town mini bus that does a circuit of the town every 15 minutes calling at all the car parks, £1 well spent!
During the winter months parking is available on the town quay for a short stay, very convenient if you can get a space. Parking is available 31st October – 1st April.
Disabled parking for badge holders is available in the town and can be found on Trafalgar Square outside Barclays bank.
There is a brief description for each cottage but if you would like to know more about the layout of property please do not hesitate to telephone as we do know each of the properties in great detail and can help you choose the cottage to meet your specific expectations & requirements.
Please note:
We would like to point out that most of our properties are traditional Cornish cottages and while they display wonderful charm and character, they can also suffer from dampness due to our coastal climate. This will benefit greatly from having a window left open a fraction to create some ventilation.
Access to some properties can be difficult so please call to discuss your selection particularly if your party includes elderly or anyone who would require easy access. Our staff know each of our properties and will be happy to discuss any access suitability issues with you.
Ferries to and from Polruan, Fowey & Bodinnick - one of the many charms of the area is the river that not only provides endless diversion and fun to all but is also a highway for people between the villages, and what a beautiful highway it is.The Polruan ferry is a passenger service that runs from the quay in Polruan to the ‘Whitehouse slip’ on the esplanade in Fowey. During the winter months October – April and during the summer evenings the ferry changes to embark / disembark passengers at the town quay in Fowey, taking you to the heart of the town.
The ferry runs every 15 minutes from 7am but there are seasonal finishing times, you should check these times before taking your trip, missing the last ferry means a long and expensive taxi ride so do keep an eye on the time!
Do not be concerned if you are a little worried about boats, the ferries are very sturdy and seaworthy vessels. Crews are not only accomplished boat handlers but also very considerate & helpful with great experience in dealing with every eventuality helping you on and off the boat with a smile and genuine concern for your well being. You should be aware that the steps and slipways can be slippery when wet so do take care and wear sensible footware.
Local tip, if it is a bit lumpy on the river either try to get under the cover of the cuddy or make sure you sit on the side of the boat facing upriver.
Passenger ferry also takes bicycles, prams & dogs (on lead).
The Bodinnick ferry runs from the slipway in Bodinnick, further up the river, to the Caffa Mill slip in Fowey. Taking cars and walking passengers it is the fastest and most dramatic way to explore the eastern side of the river and take in the joys of Polruan, Lerryn, Looe, Polperro and beyond. Equally from the Polruan side the ferry gives you quick access to Fowey and many wonders & attractions that Cornwall has to offer.
As with the Polruan ferry there are seasonal operating times which you should check so to best plan your day and travel times.
For a great day out for all the family that encompasses both ferries why not try the Hall walk? This popular & celebrated walk can be started from Fowey or Polruan is approximately 4 miles long and follows the Pont creek around & enjoys fantastic and unique views of all three villages and the countryside.
Electricity is included in the rental price. Many of our cottages have open, or wood burner fires, which really make for a cosy and welcoming atmosphere at any time of year but especially after a walk in the crisp off-season air! Some properties do charge for coal and logs if you use that supplied at the cottage. Both logs and coal are available at the village shop or better still, enjoy the fun of foraging for fallen logs on a walk or pick up some driftwood off the beach, great fun for the children, dogs too!
A very few cottages do have a coin meter to supply power, again these are clearly noted on the website.
Most of our cottages do not include towels as a matter of course and we appreciate that packing towels as well of everything else can take up considerable space in the car. We do therefore offer a very reasonable towel hire service to all our visitors. Towels are charged at £6 per person/per set and will be in place in your cottage for your arrival. If you wish to take the hire option please let us know and we will make the arrangements.
Our pets are very much part of the family and can really enhance any stay in this ideal dog walking area, many of our cottages therefore do permit dogs to stay. There are however some conditions so we do ask that you do respect conditions in clause 11 on the booking form. Dogs should not be left unattended at any time and we ask that you abide by the owners request of not allowing dogs in bedrooms or on furniture.
Each property will state if they allow a dog at a cost of £20.00 per week or part of a week per dog. Please respect the owners request not to allow dogs in any other property. We or the property owners do not accept responsibility for their safety. You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog in the streets of Polruan and indeed in the garden of the property. Please dispose of the mess in the many bins that are placed throughout the village.
Having said all that, some of our owners do not promote dogs in their cottage but do sometimes have a soft spot for a particularly waggy tail and sad eyes, if the property you like is not listed as ‘dog friendly’ do just give us a call and we can plead your case.
Happy ‘walkies’…
Nobody wants to have to cancel or curtail a well deserved holiday but we do understand that circumstances can change for all manner of reasons. We do therefore encourage visitors to take out travel insurance as you would for any foreign holiday. We have worked closely with J.L. Morris insurance brokers Ltd who offer excellent cover at very reasonable terms and would be happy to send contact details to you if you wish.
In the event of a cancellation for whatever reason, not covered by insurance, the more notice you can give us the better we can help. We will endeavour to re-let the cottage as soon as we can, if we can re-let the cottage for the same period as originally booked we will refund any deposit paid less £50 administration costs.
If however we are unable to re-let the accommodation the whole cost will be forfeited and the owner will be entitled to recover from you, the outstanding balance of the full accommodation charges. We do strongly recommend taking out insurance to cover this eventuality.
The arrival time is normally 4.00 pm on the day of your arrival. We are however aware that if you have made good time and arrive early or have small children, who could be tired you may well wish to check in earlier. On these occasions it may be possible to collect the keys earlier, however we cannot guarantee this, we will not know until the day, once we have heard from the cleaner and are sure that the property is cleaned and presented to the required standard. Departure time is 10.00 am this is to give the cleaner adequate time to prepare the cottage.
If you know you are unable to arrive during normal working hours, please let us know. If you are going to be arriving during the week you have booked we must know in advance.
Most properties are inclusive of bed linen if not it will be stated on the property information. If your chosen property does not include towels we operate a hire service for either linen or towels. If the property is not linen or towel inclusive you can choose to hire linen and/or towels and they will be at the property awaiting your arrival.
If the property states there is a cot there is no extra charge and no bedding is provided for any cots. We do have travel cots and highchairs to hire if the property does not include them, please contact Polruan Cottages
Because of the situation of Polruan being on a hill, to help us make sure a cottage is suitable please notify us at the time of booking if any members of your party have any mobility difficulties or indeed you have small children in a pram or pushchair. Please also advice us if any members of your party have an allergy – sometimes even though a dog is not permitted, the owner may take their own pets so please mention at the time of booking if this could be a problem.
Please note mobile coverage is not always good in Cornwall. O2 and Orange networks do work well in most areas of both Polruan and Fowey. Vodafone works well at the top of the village in Polruan but Fowey coverage can be patchy!
Now and again accidents are bound to happen and although we understand that this is unintentional we should point out that any loss and damages during your holiday must be paid for. Every effort is made before your arrival to ensure everything is in place. Should you find any difficulties or damage on arrival, it is in your interest to notify us as soon as possible following your arrival.
Any items found left in our cottages by our cleaners are brought to our office and noted in our lost property log. If you feel you may have left some property in a cottage after departure, please telephone or e-mail and we will do all we can to try and locate and arrange swift return to you. Cost of postage will need to be paid by card prior to the package being sent. Lost property is held for six months only.
Most cottages will be happy to accommodate a short break out of season. At any other time short breaks are subject to late availability.
3 night break – 70% of the weekly rental. 4 night break – 80% of the weekly rental. 5 night break – 90% of the weekly rental.
If your stay is for a special occasion we will be happy to help arrange flowers, champagne or a cake from our local tearoom – we are only a phone call away.
